HOLYER AN GOF PUBLISHERS' AWARDS  2012

GUIDELINES FOR ENTRANTS

(For books published on or between January 1st and December 31st 2011)

These annual Publishers' Awards are promoted by Gorsedh Kernow for publications relating to Cornwall or the Cornish language.  The overall award - The Holyer an Gof Cup - is perpetual, and given in memory of the Cornish publisher, Leonard Truran, carrying forward his Bardic Name.

Entries for the above awards are now being sought.  The closing date is Wednesday 15th February 2012.

A complete list of entries will be published on this website soon after this date.

Entries can only be accepted from publishers and will not be accepted direct from authors unless the publication is self-published.   The submission of an author’s work by the publisher will be taken as agreement by the author that s/he is willing for the work to be submitted and considered for an award.

The classes for judging may be amended at a meeting of Readers immediately after the closing date for the receipt of books, and will be determined by the balance of books received. Holyer an Gof may change the class a book is entered for if it is particularly inappropriate.  The relevant publisher will always be informed of this decision.  There is no separate class for works in dialect, they should be entered in the relevant class according to genre.

The evaluation of each publication is carried out by a number of Readers.   Most are Bards of Gorsedh Kernow, and chosen for their expertise and experience in a relevant field.  A list of Readers will be published on the Holyer an Gof website.

Anonymous evaluations are submitted to a meeting of all Readers, who nominate a selection of publications for possible awards in each class. The Nominations will be published on the Holyer an Gof Website and the outright Winners will be announced at the Awards Evening, along with the overall Holyer an Gof Award winner.

The Awards Evening for the nominated publishers and their authors will be staged at Waterstones, Truro in July 2012, with an invited guest list.  Each Nominee will receive a Gorsedh Certificate, and overall winners may propose a Cornish Charity of their choice to receive a donation.   An overall Holyer an Gof Trophy will be made to a publication which, in the judgement of the Readers is a work of outstanding quality.

Criteria

  1. The awards will be made for material first published during the year 2011.  Second and subsequent editions will only be considered where there are substantial changes considered to be of significant importance or where the first edition appeared before the inception of Holyer an Gof.
  2. The entries should be carefully edited, quality publications.
  3. The publications should add to the knowledge, enjoyment and appreciation of Cornish life, literature and culture both in Cornwall and throughout the world.
  4. Each publication may be entered in more than one class.    Where publications are entered into more than one class please forward the relevant number of copies.
  5. The criteria for evaluation of each publication are available in the Guidelines for Readers, which will be published on the Holyer an Gof Website.

The Literary Guild Award for Authors

In addition to the Holyer an Gof Publishers Awards the Cornish Literary Guild will present a second perpetual award, The Literary Salver, to an author of their choice.   Nominations for this award will be made by the Readers of Holyer an Gof and a winner will be chosen by members of the Cornish Literary Guild.   The Salver will be presented during the evening at Waterstones.
